    Job Description
    WE TRAIN AND CERTIFY ON SITE AT NO COST TO THE EMPLOYEE, NO EXPERIENCE REQUIRED!
    GENERAL PURPOSE:  The nursing assistant is to render good service to the resident in the form of nursing care. Per OBRA, Code of Federal Regulations, section 42 CFR Chapter IV, “students do not perform any services for which they have not been trained and been found proficient by the instructor.” Once the nursing assistant has been trained and the Instructor has checked off their skills, the nursing assistant may perform the following duties:  
               
    JOB FUNCTIONS:
     
    PERSONAL CARE
    NURSING CARE, AND
    FOOD SERVICE
    FUNCTION
    Duties:  Assist in making unoccupied beds and keep unit in good order. Under supervision assists with serving meals. Pass bedpans. Provide fresh drinking water and remove water pitchers to the kitchen. Keep drawers, shelves, bedside stands and closets neat and clean. Is responsible for the cleanliness of the residents unit, this includes periodic straightening out of resident’s closet, drawers and bedside stand. The Nursing Assistant should be able to recognize restlessness, fear and irritability in the resident as normal reactions caused by illness.  
     
    Provide physical comfort through rest and relaxation, proper positioning is essential, whether standing, sitting or reclining position. This is provided whether the resident is in bed or a wheelchair.
     
    Provide the interpreting of the diet to the residents, observe, report and chart conditions of appetite, and knowing general customs and regulations concerning diet.
     
    Must be able to know the needs of a feeder resident with total understanding and consideration and should never hurry.
     
    Reports changes in resident condition to charge nurse, such as unusual signs or symptoms, accidents or injuries, etc.; and provide nursing function as directed by supervisor.
     
    Must know the adequate fluid intake for proper hydration of residents. Know that involuntary urination or defecation can be prevented with good bowel and bladder programs.
     
    SAFETY AND INFECTION
    CONTROL FUNCTIONS
    Duties:  Understands and follows safety and sanitation rules and promptly reports any violations to supervisor. Adheres to facility dress code including use of gait belt and back support.  
     
    INSERVICE
    FUNCTIONS
    Duties:  Attend orientation.
     
    RESIDENTS’ RIGHTS
    AND POSITIVE
    RELATIONSHIPS FUNCTION
    Duties:  Understands, complies with, and promotes all rules regarding residents’ rights; promote positive relationships with residents, visitors and regulators, to include presenting a professional appearance and attitude.  
    ETHICS AND
    COMPLIANCE
    Duties:   Conforms to expected ethical and legal standards including matters related to resident abuse or neglect, by personally complying with laws and regulations.
     
    When in doubt about whether a particular activity is proper, refrains from the activity and obtains guidance from their supervisor, the Director of Nursing Services.
     
    Reinforces through example and, where applicable, training, the expectation that all employees that they supervise conform to these ethical and legal standards, including matters related to resident abuse or neglect.
     
    Responds promptly and thoroughly when problems are reported by other employees. Assists in planning, implementing and monitoring corrective actions, when problems including ethics and compliance problems and resident abuse or neglect identified.
     
     
     
    OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
     
    SUPPORT FUNCTIONS Duties:  Follow directives of RN or LVN on duty. Assist in the bedside care of residents and correct charging of this care. Understands procedure to follow in an emergency or with an unusual occurrence.
    STAFF
    DEVELOPMENT
    Duties: Attend and participate in educational activities, in-service training, and staff meetings.
     
    QUALITY IMPROVEMENT Duties:  Participate in Quality Improvement activities as assigned.
     
    OTHER DUTIES Duties:  Other duties as assigned or needed.
     
     
    Physical and Sensory Requirements (With or Without the Aid of Mechanical Devices):
    Walking/mobility, reaching, climbing, bending, lifting, grasping, pushing, pulling; fine hand coordination; ability to distinguish smells and temperatures; ability to hear and respond to pages; ability to read and write; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to communicate with residents and others; ability to understand and follow training and in-service educations; ability to instruct personnel during training education and staff meetings; ability to travel; and ability to remain calm in emergency situations and when handling multiple tasks.
     
    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Must within four (4) months of employment have completed state required training and a competency evaluation program.
    • Must have the ability to read, write and follow oral and written directions at a level necessary to complete the job.
    • Must be able to relate positively and favorably to residents and families and to work cooperatively with other employees.
    • Must maintain regular attendance.
    • Must meet all local health regulations, and pass post-employment physical exam if required. This requirement also includes drug screening, criminal background investigation, and reference inquiry. Must be state certified after four (4) months of employment.
    • Must be capable of performing the essential job functions of this job with or without accommodation.
