Local Chamber Players to Debut New Original Composition
The White Spruce Chamber Players, including DWU adjunct faculty member and violist Liz Soladay, will perform the world premier of a piece written expressly for the group. Father Nigel McBain, a former music director at Holy Family Catholic Church in Mitchell, composed the piece for the group after hearing them play a few years ago.
McBain, a native of Australia, served the Holy Family parish in 2017. He wrote "Palazzo," “which is an ode to the people of Mitchell and the Palace City, written specifically for the White Spruce Chamber Players,” according to an Aug. 31 post on the South Dakota Public Broadcasting webpage.
Soladay says it is a unique opportunity to perform new music, and especially meaningful when the piece they will play was written for the Players. Unfortunately, the composer will not be able to attend the performance due to ongoing COVID restrictions in Australia.
McBain’s composition, along with pieces by Gershwin and Dvořák will be performed on Saturday, Oct. 1, at 4 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church in Mitchell. The performance is open to the public. Those attending may contribute to a free will offering.
