MITCHELL – Dakota Wesleyan University professor emeritus Dr. Michael Farney will bring his portable planetarium to the Mitchell Public Library on Friday, July 30, to present “Summer Stars.”
Using the Florence Glenny Farney Dakota Discovery Dome, an inflatable planetarium, Dr. Farney will highlight seven amazing summer stars that stand out in Mitchell’s light-polluted sky. These are stars that everyone should know. Each of these stars is special with a unique personality: the brightest summer star; the largest summer star; the farthest summer star; the unmoving summer star; and so on, into the night. Dr. Farney will share what makes each star special.
Presentations are set to begin at 10:00 a.m., lasting about 20 minutes with time for questions. Dr. Farney will present every half hour during the day to accommodate anyone who would like to participate. The presentations are designed for elementary-aged children, and adults should accompany their children per library policy.

Participants are limited to ten for each program due to the enclosed nature of the dome. Masks will be required to enter the planetarium in order to keep everyone safe. Mitchell Public Library will have masks available for anyone who needs one.
