Executive Director, Jen Johnston
In 2016, Mitchell Main Street & Beyond announced the appointment of Jen Johnston to Executive Director for their 100-plus member economic development organization focused on marketing and rehabilitating of Mitchell’s Historic Commercial District. The hiring committee’s action comes with the fullest confidence that Johnston will continue to be an excellent steward of the organization’s mission. They recognize Johnston as a strong leader who has several years of experience, and the qualifications that directly align with all the position’s requirements and expectations.
Johnson served as the retail marketing and event coordinator for Cabela’s prior to her most recent position as marketing coordinator at the Mitchell Convention and Visitors Bureau. Notable throughout her professional career, she received the Cabela’s corporate-wide retail marketing outfitter of the year award and the community champion’s award for her outstanding, unique and heroic acts inspiring good will, social responsibility and community involvement. Johnston was also instrumental in bringing NBC Sports to town to film the hour long television premier of pheasant season in South Dakota titled, Opening Day in the fall of 2014. She has extensive experience working with non-profit organizations at the local and state level, and has been instrumental at the Convention and Visitors Bureau implementing a new digital and radio campaign as well as increasing web and social media impressions by over 130 percent from the previous year.
“Jen has proven herself as a rising star in our community and we are lucky to welcome her as a part of the Main Street team,” said Jeff Logan, board president. “Her experience, personality and passion are a perfect fit for our organization. We look forward to working with Jen to move us forward in our short and long term goals to revitalize Mitchell’s business district.”
She has a bachelor's degree in communications with a marketing and graphic design emphasis from the University of South Dakota. Her immediate activities will include enhancing membership services, planning and program development, further exploring streetscape plans and building on the popular summertime event – 1st Fridays on Main, formerly Downtown Thursdays.
Johnston is involved in the community and enjoys volunteering her time with Mitchell Rotary, Junior Achievement, The Mitchell Area Optimist Club, Gertie Belle Rogers PTA, and with her church. Her favorite pastime is spending time in the outdoors with family and friends.
Bobbie is our board secretary with Mitchell Main Street & Beyond, and serves on the Organizational and Development Committees. In response to why Bobbie volunteers with our downtown organization, she says: "Downtown is the heart of the city. I lived in downtown Mitchell for seven years as a youth, and I'd like to feel the same vibe I felt back then for all ages." Bobbie was also recognized at the 2018 Annual Banquet as the Main Street Champion. She is pictured here with South Dakota's Lieutenant Governor, Matt Michels.
Mark has been involved with MMS&B since its start in 2007. “I’ve been in a number of different metro areas where they’ve restored Main Street and downtown areas into multi-use developments. It's attractive and those are the places I like to go visit. There is character and uniqueness to those places. Having grown up here, I felt it was important to be part of the change to do the same thing to Mitchell.” Mark says his favorite part of Mitchell Main Street is the architectural character of the buildings. But a close second are the local shops. “They are very personal and comfortable.” MMS&B thanks Mark and all its volunteers for their hard work!
